In my last blogpost, I mentioned that I have been enjoying some very different knitting for me as I am busily knitting poppies! This is for an appeal which was launched by the Corsham Town Council here in Wiltshire. They are working with a number of local groups to create a huge poppy display to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. This will centre around St Bartholomew’s Church in Corsham, but if they get enough poppies then this will also spill out into the town itself. The initial appeal was for 10,000 poppies but the local WI’s “Poppyometer” topped that a couple of days ago! So they now have a new target to get to 20,000 poppies by the end of August. It is certainly an ambitious project and will make a stunning display I’m sure. I experimented with various methods to work the poppies, including a Garter Stitch pattern that gave a nice flat poppy and also a 4x4 ribbed design which was quite pretty. However, I wanted to shape my poppies so they were a bit more like an opening bud. So I started with a K9-p3 rib and then used a central decrease to shape the flower. I really like the way this has come and it is a nice, easy pattern to work – which is always a bonus, isn't it. If you fancy knitting some poppies to join in, then please take a look at my website for the free Poppy Flower pattern. You can just make a single poppy and wear it in your lapel, or make lots and attach them to a wreath or frame for your local community display. If you would like to join in with the Corsham event, then the address to send them to is: Knitted Poppy Appeal Co-Ordinator, Corsham Town Hall, High St, CORSHAM, Wilts SN13 0EZ United Kingdom They will be pleased to receive any style of poppies of course, and they can be knitted or crocheted. However, please note that they are asking only for red poppies, not purple or other colours. It will be wonderful to see how many poppies the organisers end up with. I’ll add some updates later on in the summer and post some pictures when it is all assembled. Until next time – Happy Poppy Knitting! Moira
