Poppies in Wiltshire

11/11/2025

Knitted poppies are wrapped around the iron gate of St Barthomews Church in Corsham, Wltshire.
Knitters, one and all – you made so many poppies!

Well done to everyone who knitted Poppy Flowers for this year's special Remembrance Day, whether it was for a display close to home or if you sent flowers to Corsham for the event that I wrote about previously here.

The organisers in Corsham were initially hoping for 10,000 poppies to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, but their “Poppy-o-meter” finally registered a grand total of more than 31,000!

They said that they had received poppies not just from Wiltshire but from all over the UK plus the USA, Canada and lots of other places too – so *thank you* again everyone for sending in all your poppy flowers.
Thousands of poppies waft on a curtain of netting from the tower of St Bartholomews Church in Corsham, Wiltshire.
St Bartholomew's Church in Corsham had a wonderful draped display which flowed from the top of the tower, starting as one curtain of flowers then parting to go either side of the war memorial at the base. It looked so impressive with the long flowing netting covered in poppies gently wafting in the breeze.

There were knitted poppies and crocheted poppies in all different co-ordinating reds, some small, some large, some flat, some with separate petals, but producing a stunning display.

The gates were also wrapped with flowers, and individual round red pom-poms had also been attached to sticks to line the paths. Then as a poignant touch, a knitted army helmet and boot was set at the foot of the memorial.

There was also a touch of Royalty for the opening event! The organising group sent a letter to the Queen to see if she would come to Corsham for the occasion and to everyone’s surprise, she agreed! She has a house not far away and it made the event extra special that she came along, adding a final poppy to the display too.

Many thanks again to everyone who downloaded the Poppy Flower pattern and for contributing poppies either to your local event or for sending them in to join the many other thousands of poppies in Corsham. It made for such a memorable event.

I also have some other very special news as we have been busy adding more stitches to our Reversible Knitting Stitches book! There will be a new update ready in just a few more days, so I’ll be posting more about that next time.

Until then – Happy Knitting!
